Who are we

Jack Cohen founded Tesco in 1919 using just £30 to set up a market stall in East London. On his first day trading he sold £4 of goods, making £1 profit on sales.

Today, Tesco employs 476,000 employees across 11 markets and has recorded group sales of £48.4bn.

At the heart of it all, Tesco does what Jack set out to do almost 100 years ago… Serving shoppers a little better every day. Our commitment to giving the best possible service to our customers is central to our business.

That’s where our core purpose comes in:

Serving our customers, communities and planet a little better every day.

Serving our customers, communities and planet a little better every day means we always keep customers at the heart of what we do, while also reflecting our responsibilities to the communities we serve and to society more broadly.

We put wellbeing first

We put colleague wellbeing first, in lots of little ways (and some big ways too). It’s all about helping our colleagues make every day a little better for themselves and their families, in whatever way works for them.

With flexible working options to support your work-life balance and access to wellbeing experts to support colleagues’ mental health through our Employee Assistance Programme. As a Tesco colleague, you’ll have access to everything you need to help you be at your best.

We're also really proud to be a business full of varied and exciting opportunities. We give our colleagues the tools to shape their own future with a career path that meets their own personal goals and aspirations.

Whether colleagues want to learn and grow in their current job, find a new job in a specialist area or move to a completely different part of the business to gain more experience, there's lots of exciting career opportunities here at Tesco.
