Contract type: Permanent

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won't be solved by science alone.

We are looking for an Investment Analyst to join our team.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be working within the Investment team reporting to one of the Principals in the team.

This role is part of the Direct Equities team within the Investment division. Wellcome's Investment portfolio of £37.6 billion is diversified across asset classes and geographies with an objective of generating returns to fund the charitable mission and at least preserve the endowment in real terms long-term. Our directly held public equities consist of a reasonably concentrated roster of high quality, large and mega cap companies that we can own for a long period of time. We are looking for resilient business models that can compound at attractive rates over time and aim to use interim volatility to our advantage.

What will I be doing?

The Investment Analyst will cover existing holdings in directly held public equities and conduct research on potential new investments. This includes fundamental research and analytical work, as well as building and maintaining relationships with company management teams, boards and other industry participants.

As an Investment Analyst, you will:

  • Provide qualitative and quantitative analytical skills to the portfolio management team, which is responsible for investing directly and indirectly across all investment asset classes, with a specific focus on directly held listed equities.

  • Assist in the monitoring and review of existing public equity holdings, and evaluation of new opportunities.

  • Research investment ideas to contribute to the wider portfolio.

  • Actively network and promote Wellcome in the investment industry. Liaise with third parties, including company management teams and boards, sell side analysts and other buy side investors.

  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

Is this job for me?

We are looking for people with a strong interest in long term investing. People who will thrive in this role are those who are intellectually curious, pro-active, and who enjoy working as part of a team to provide healthy challenge and analyse qualitative and quantitative data to identify great investments. The successful candidate will have high levels of integrity and strong relationship management skills. You will have the opportunity to build your career as a globally-oriented, long term investor, with experience across a range of asset classes, but focusing in particular on listed equities, primarily globally diversified large and mega cap companies.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Demonstrable experience of researching and analysing public equities, either on the buy side or sell side.

  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, including complex financial modelling

  • Experience of delivering key projects/pieces of work to a high standard within tight deadlines.

  • Ability to build strong relationships with counterparties and colleagues, while resolving any conflicts in a confident and constructive manner

  • Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in Excel.

  • Knowledge of Wellcome's mission of key strategic priorities and how role relates to these.

  • Ability to work on multiple pieces of work across stakeholder groups.
